Animal Keeper Tours
Unique opportunities to experience the Desert Museum through the eyes of an animal keeper. Two tours are offered:
- Walk With A Keeper is a year-round tour approximately 45 minutes in length covering 1/4 mile.
- Seasonal Hummingbird Tour is approximately one half hour and takes place in the hummingbird exhibit.
Seasonal Hummingbird Tour
Enjoy an intimate experience with the hummingbirds in the world-famous hummingbird exhibit before the museum opens. This tour takes place in the hummingbird aviary, where visitors gain an in-depth, close-up look at the Desert Museum's hummingbird program. Topics covered range from how to identify and feed hummingbirds, hummingbird breeding, basic hummingbird biology and the challenges of exhibiting these high-energy birds. January through May is breeding and nesting season. Tour limited to ten guests, who are afforded a unique opportunity to learn about a one-of-a-kind exhibit, take photographs, and get close to these magnificent jewels of the desert.
- Mondays - Thursdays
- Tour is $30 in addition to regular admission price. No coupons or discounts are valid for tour.
- This tour takes place one-half hour before the Museum opens. In order to maximize the experience, please meet on the front patio at 6:45 a.m.
- Ticket sales are by online reservation only. Last ticket sold on day prior to tour.

Walk With A Keeper
Guests meet animals up close (otter and bighorn sheep) and go behind the scenes and learn about animal care.
- Thursdays and Sundays only
- Tour is $25 in addition to regular admission price. No children under 12 allowed on tour. No coupons or discounts are valid for tour.
- Tickets must be purchased by 10:00 a.m.
- Tour starts promptly from the otter exhibit @ 10:30 a.m., guests should gather there at 10:15 a.m.
- Tour is fully accessible via wheelchair and scooter. Some behind-the-scenes areas are not available to service animals.
