Coati Kids Club Coati Kids Club Special Events for 2010

Mark your calendars now for these fun events! And as always, we'll send you an invitation before each one.

Mountains, Mines, and Minerals Hike: Saturday, January 30, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Meet at the Education Annex.

What better season for a hike in the desert? We'll take a hike up King Canyon to discover the mining history of the Tucson Mountains. Total hike time 3 hours, distance 3.5 miles. Afterwards, visit our grounds for the Mineral Madness sale and family fun fair (11 a.m. - 4 p.m.).

Bonus Event: Beat Back Buffelgrass Day, Saturday, February 6, 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Meet at Education Annex.

Last year the Coati Club chose a buffelgrass cleanup site near the Museum and agreed to adopt it and remove grass there each year. It's that time again. We'll join forces with hundreds of other volunteers throughout Tucson on this special day to protect the Sonoran Desert from this invading grass.

Who Dung It? Saturday, February 20, 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Education Annex Classrooms 1-2 and on grounds.

Although it may be difficult to see some desert animals, they do leave many clues behind. The challenge is to figure out who left those clues. From tracks to scat, we'll learn to read these clues and become desert detectives to help solve the mystery of just who "dung it" in the desert.

Seeing is Believing! Saturday, March 27, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Education Annex Classrooms and on grounds.

You may not believe your eyes (or ears or nose or fingers) as we explore the amazing world of animal senses. See, hear, smell, and feel how your senses compare to those of other animals in our region.

The Great Deception: Saturday, May 22, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., in the Education Annex Classrooms and on grounds.

Insects that look like sticks, moths with huge “eyes,” non-venomous snakes that look (and act) like rattlesnakes? Animals and plants employ some amazing trickery to help them avoid hungry predators, reproduce, and more. We'll meet some of our desert's scam artists and how they use deception to survive.

Sky Stories: Take Me to the Moon! Saturday, June 19, 6:30 - 9 p.m., Baldwin Education Building, rm. 101A & B and on grounds.

Join us for Summer Saturday Evening on a first quarter moon for lunar exploration!

Why do moon phases happen? How do animals adapt to and use moonlight? We'll explore these questions and view the moon and more through telescopes on a desert summer night.

Totally Turtles: Saturday, July 10, 9:30 a.m.. - 12:00 p.m. Education Annex Classrooms 1-2 .

Turtle or tortoise? Land or water? Discover the world of Sonoran Desert region turtles and meet some in person. Learn how you can be a desert tortoise steward through our Tortoise Adoption Program.

Desert Music: Saturday, October 2, 9:30 - a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Education Annex Classrooms and on grounds.

Jam to the sounds of the desert with Axhel Muñoz and Jesús García, and learn how to make your own musical instruments out of recycled materials.

Desert Winter Wonderland: Saturday, December 11, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Education Annex Classrooms and on grounds.

We've all heard about desert summers and how animals and plants are adapted to their heat and aridity. But what about the winter? How do our warm desert region's organisms survive these colder times? We'll explore these and celebrate the Coati Kids Club's “sweet 16th birthday” at this special winter program.

Plus, Coati Kids get discounts to our Summer Museum Explorers kid's camp. This year's camps will be from July 16-29 and August 2-5. Check our camp page for more information.
